ISOLATIONISM: BEEN THERE, DONE THAT

Comments

One of the arguments for isolationists has been, "If we weren't outsourcing our jobs, we would be the leading manufacturers in the world." Free trade is not a zero sum game. In other words, just because my neighbor has plenty does not mean the rest of us can't have plenty. In fact, the more he has, the more he can invest and trade and keep others busy. So his success helps me to succeed. As others succeed, the more the rest of us can succeed.

If I am angry that my neighbor has more than I do, and I and most of us vote to take some of what he has and give it out to the most needy among us, the less that neighbor will invest and spend and the fewer people will be employed and the fewer businesses will succeed. In essence, the more rich fat happy people are out there investing and buying the more successful the little guy is and the more chance the little guy has of becoming a rich fat happy guy who spends and invests....

Don't break what ain't broke because you are envious of what others have.

JudgeBob-

Your point is well taken. The fact is we are in a global economy and there is no going back to the good old days. As you note, the pie that is being divided is an ever growing pie, not a fixed sized pie. There is plenty to go around.
